2. Shoe Recommendation: Gait Analysis Recording

Record the customer's gait to explore their personalized back- and side-view analyses and find areas of improvement.

Updated over 2 months ago

After completing the Questionnaire, the next step is to record the customer’s running form.

This video is what powers Ochy’s AI gait analysis — providing the biomechanical data that links movement to shoe recommendations.

Purpose

To capture the customer’s side and back view running form using a tablet or smartphone.

The video allows Ochy to analyze the customer's running form on biomechanical parameters such as pelvic stability, knee alignment, pronation, overstride, and torso position.

What You’ll Need

  • Device: smartphone or tablet with the Ochy app.

  • Setup: treadmill or flat open area of at least 10 meters.

  • Lighting: ensure clear, bright visibility (avoid strong shadows).

  • Runner gear: customer should wear shorts or tight-fitting running gear for accurate joint detection. Ideally, the customer should bring their current running shoes when performing the gait analysis.

How to Record

  1. Select “New Analysis”

From the Shoe Recommendation dashboard, tap Start Gait Analysis.

  2. Choose the Recording Angle

    • Side View → Shows key movement metrics like speed, stride length, cadence, and contact time, along with an overall look at the runner’s posture — including overstride, knee bend, head position, and back alignment.

    • Back View → Shows alignment across the left and right sides, including pelvic drop, knee tracking, and pronation patterns.

You can record both views for a complete assessment, or choose one depending on your workflow. However, the shoe recommendation will always be more accurate when both the side and back views are captured.

  3. Position the Camera

    • Side view: place the device around 3–4 meters from the treadmill or running lane, lens at the runner’s hip height.

    • Back view: align the camera directly behind the runner on the treadmill, at around 2–3 meters distance.

Make sure the runner fits the shadow guide shown on the screen—this applies to both side and back recordings.

    • Keep the camera steady — use a tripod or counter surface if available.

  4. Start Recording

    • Record for about 5–10 seconds of continuous running.

    • Ask the runner to maintain a natural pace.

  5. Review & Upload

    • Check that the full body is visible from head to foot throughout.

    • Tap Upload Video — Ochy will process the data automatically.

    • Analysis results are typically ready within under 1 minute.

Staff Tips

  • Encourage the runner to warm up lightly before recording for a natural gait pattern.

  • Keep background movement minimal to help the AI tracking remain accurate.

  • If the app notifies “error,” re-record with slightly better lighting or contrast.

  • Always double-check that both the Questionnaire and Gait Analysis are completed before moving to The Shoe Recommendation.
